CASE STUDY

MODERNIZING
TRADITION AT THE
VILLAGE SUPPER CLUB

Anne Kustner, AKLD Lighting Design

Project Overview

The Village Supper Club in DeLaven, Wisconsin, a beloved local institution, underwent a significant renovation to preserve its long-standing history while introducing a modern take on Wisconsin’s cherished dining tradition.

AKLD Lighting Design partnered with DMAC Architecture & Design and led the project with a clear vision:
to honor the restaurant’s past while creating an updated, yet traditional, family-friendly supper club experience.

The Challenge

The challenge was to balance between ambient, task and decorative lighting to create function, warmth and character. The lighting design was a team effort involving architects, interior designers, and lighting experts.

The Solution

Fixture Selection

The process began with inspirational images and renderings provided by DMAC Architects. These creative concepts guided the selection of fixtures, particularly the Modern Forms chosen for their aesthetic appeal and compatibility with the club’s traditional ambiance.

Layered Lighting

The team focused on creating a layered lighting scheme, beginning with the decorative layer. Twelve large-scale Modern Forms Double Bubble chandeliers illuminate the main dining area.

They created a custom lighting design over the bar area using Lucio Track Luminaires from WAC Lighting hidden in the beams above. Five Modern Forms Double Bubble pendant lights were added to achieve the desired ambiance.

In the rest rooms, the elegant Modern Forms Luzerne Wall Sconce, featuring ACLED driverless technology illuminating the prismatic reeded glass cylinders, were installed over the sinks.

Color Temperature

Given the supper club’s rustic and traditional atmosphere, the team opted for an inviting glow. They worked closely with Modern Forms and WAC Lighting to customize LED chips to a 2700K color temperature for the Double Bubble pendant lights which mimicked the warm, incandescent-like light essential for creating the space’s cozy, intimate atmosphere.

Ryan Koch, Modern Forms Regional Specification Sales Manager, highlighted the importance of being able to customize lighting solutions in-house. WAC’s ability to create LED boards allowed for the precise modifications needed to achieve the perfect color temperature for the Village Supper Club.

Ease of Control

Remote control via Bluetooth was implemented, adding convenience and supporting sustainability by enabling precise control over energy usage.

Conclusion

The renovation of the Village Supper Club successfully blended tradition with modernity, creating a space that honors its history while embracing contemporary design and technology.

The collaborative effort between DMAC Architecture & Interiors, AKLD Lighting Design and Modern Forms/WAC Lighting resulted in a beautifully balanced, functional and inviting environment that pays homage to Wisconsin’s supper club tradition.
