Select the Perfect CCT For Any Space
Lighting plays a pivotal role in creating the perfect ambiance in your living space. Proper illumination can transform a room, setting the mood and enhancing the overall aesthetic. Modern Forms, renowned for its contemporary lighting designs, goes a step further in perfecting ambiance by incorporating Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) and advanced color selectable LED technology in its luminaires. With these LED options, interior designers can easily craft customized illumination solutions to fit the design intent of the room and meet their clients’ preferences.
What is CCT, and Why Does it Matter?
But what, exactly, is CCT? Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) describes and measures a light’s appearance and helps define its visual and emotional impact. The color can be expressed with both descriptors and on the Kelvin (K) scale.
Color Descriptors
- Warm: Warm tones tend to be on the red and yellow parts of the color spectrum. You’ll often see this described as “soft white.” It brings a comfortable and relaxed feeling to a room.
- Neutral: Neutral light is often described as “bright white.” It isn’t as relaxing. Instead, it promotes a sense of energy and focus in spaces like bathrooms, utility rooms, and kitchens.
- Cool: Also called “daylight,” cool light has a bluish tone that mimics light at noon on a sunny day. It is excellent for spaces used for focused, detailed tasks.
The Kelvin Scale
The second way to measure color temperature is on the Kelvin (K) scale. Lower values represent warmer (more yellow or orange) colors on this scale, and higher values represent cooler (blue) illumination.
Using the Kelvin Scale, LED color temperatures are described as:
2700K – 3000K: Warm Light
3500K: Soft White Light
4000K: Pure White Light
5000K: Cool Light
Color Rendering
A third consideration when selecting LED luminaires is the Color Rendering Index (CRI). CRI is a quantitative measure of a light source’s ability to accurately reproduce colors compared to a natural or ideal source, such as sunlight. It is a scale ranging from 0 to 100, with higher values indicating better color rendering.
A higher CRI is generally desirable, especially in applications where accurate color perception is critical, such as art galleries, retail spaces, design studios and healthcare settings. This level of CRI ensures that tones appear vibrant, rich, and true to life. Investing in high-quality fixtures with superior color rendering capabilities can make artwork, furniture, fabrics and architectural details look their best, enhancing the overall luxurious feel of the space.
CCT Technology Found in Modern Forms Luminaires
Modern Forms understands how important CCT is in influencing a space’s ambiance, and our lighting is designed with this in mind. We use three types of color temperature technology, all of which have a high 90 CRI.
- 1CCT: the fixture has a single color temperature option of 2700K, 3000K, 3500K or 4000K.
- 3CCT: An easily accessible switch in the canopy allows for a selection of either temperature ranges at the time of installation, either 2700K, 3000K and 3500K or 3000K, 3500K and 4000K.
- 4CCT: Four color temperatures are available using the accessible switch to select from 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, or 4000K CCT
The type of CCT technology found with individual Modern Forms luminaires will be indicated in its product specifications on the website and printed materials. We also offer customized LED color temperatures.
Modern Forms takes customization to a whole new level with color selectable LED technology. With the wide range of CCT options available, the ability to produce warm or cool tones allows interior designers to tailor the illumination to the desired mood or ambiance in different spaces. Whether your client prefers the warmth of traditional incandescent or the modern cool tones of daylight, the CCT choices available give you the power to choose.
How Color Selectable Technology Works
Color-selectable technology allows users to choose from multiple color temperature options using a switch inside the fixture’s canopy.
The switch corresponds to the specific CCT options available for selection and is designed to be easily accessible during installation. The color temperature can be set by adjusting the switch inside the canopy. The installer can choose the position that aligns with the chosen lighting preferences or the requirements of the space.
For example, a warmer temperature may be selected for a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, while a cooler CCT may be preferred for tasks that require focused and alert lighting.
The LEDs can also be dimmed, enabling users to adjust the color temperature and modulate the illumination’s intensity, providing even greater control over the environment.
Correlated Color Temperature and color selectable technology are powerful tools that empower designers to transform spaces by influencing how occupants perceive and interact with their environment. By understanding their nuances and impact on atmosphere and functionality, designers can harness the full potential of these technologies to create immersive and purposeful lighting plans.
Smart Control to Personalize Lighting Effects
The integration of smart controls enables users to adjust color, intensity and even the direction of light remotely, providing unparalleled customization and convenience. Smart home systems can create scenarios that evolve throughout the day, adapting to different moods and occasions. Whether it’s a subtle, warm glow for an intimate dinner or a vibrant, energetic illumination for a social gathering, the versatility of LED technology ensures that luxury fixtures can adapt to any setting.
Ways to Use CCT Technology When Selecting LED Lighting
When selecting the correct color temperature, consider these factor to make sure it complements the design intent and meets the space’s functional needs. Here are some key considerations.
Setting the Mood
With CCT technology, the temperature of the LED light source within the fixture can be adjusted to match the desired ambiance. Opt for lower CCT values, such as 2700K or 3000K, for a warm and intimate atmosphere.
Spaces requiring a more clinical or modern feel benefit from fixtures with higher CCT values since cooler temperatures (e.g., 4,000K to 6,000K) contribute to a more energized and vibrant environment.
Task-Specific Lighting
Understanding the nature of tasks performed in a space allows designers to choose the appropriate CCT. For instance, cooler tones are beneficial in workspaces where focus and productivity are essential, while softer and warmer temperatures may be suitable for reading and relaxation areas.
Integration with Natural Light
Consider the integration of artificial and natural light sources. Warmer color temperatures complements the warm tones of daylight, while cooler temperatures may be preferred in spaces with ample natural light for consistency.
Time of Day Consideration
Recognize the impact of lighting throughout the day. Choose fixtures with adjustable color temperatures (e.g., 4 CCT technology) to adapt the illumination levels to different times of the day or activities, providing flexibility and versatility.
Dynamic schemes can mimic the changing color temperatures of natural daylight throughout the day, promoting circadian rhythm and well-being.
Aesthetic Harmony
Coordinating CCT across different fixtures in a space ensures visual harmony, avoiding color inconsistencies that may disrupt the overall design.
As LEDs continue to evolve, the ability to manipulate CCT opens up new possibilities for creative expression and enhanced user experiences within their living environments.
Architectural and Interior Finishes
Take into account the colors and finishes of architectural and interior elements. Warm color temperatures can enhance warm-toned finishes, while cooler temperatures may complement cool-toned materials. The goal is to achieve a harmonious and cohesive design.
